Getting to South River | Travel & Transportation
South River is an ideal gateway to the Almaguin Highlands and Algonquin region, offering convenient access by road, bus, and, soon, passenger rail. Whether you're visiting for outdoor recreation, community events, or a relaxing Northern Ontario getaway, reaching South River is easy.
Northlander Passenger Train (Coming Soon)
The return of the Ontario Northland Northlander passenger train will significantly improve access to South River.
South River will be:
- The only Northlander passenger rail stop between Huntsville and North Bay.
- The only Northlander station serving the Almaguin Highlands.
This new service will provide visitors from Toronto and communities across Ontario with a convenient and comfortable way to experience South River and the surrounding region.
For the latest schedules, fares, and service updates, please visit the Ontario Northland website.
Bus Service
South River is currently served by both Ontario Northland Bus and FlixBus, providing regular connections to Toronto, North Bay, Sudbury, and many other Ontario communities.
Visitors are encouraged to consult the respective service providers for current schedules, fares, and route information before travelling.
Ride Sharing Through Poparide
Poparide is a popular intercity ride-sharing platform that connects drivers with passengers travelling between major cities and communities across Ontario. Depending on driver availability, visitors may be able to find rides between the Greater Toronto Area and South River.
As ride availability varies, visitors are encouraged to check the platform regularly and book in advance to secure transportation for their trip.
Please note: Ride availability is not guaranteed and depends on drivers posting trips to or through the South River area.
Local Transportation
South River is currently developing a local ride-sharing and community transportation system to improve mobility for both residents and visitors. Additional transportation options will be announced as they become available.
At this time, there is no dedicated local public transportation or shuttle service within the community. Visitors are encouraged to contact their accommodation provider, event organizer, tour operator, or destination service provider in advance to inquire about transportation assistance.
Visitors arriving by bus or train who require transportation within South River, including to local accommodations, Tom Thomson Park, restaurants, or other attractions, are also welcome to contact the Municipal Office for general visitor information. While we cannot guarantee transportation, we will gladly provide available information and help connect visitors with local transportation options whenever possible.
