Join us at Tom Thomson Park for a unique evening that brings together art, local heritage, community participation, and astronomy.

Tom Thomson's connection to South River remains an important part of our community's identity. Thomson travelled through this region by canoe, following the South River toward Algonquin Park, and the landscape that surrounds us today helped inspire some of his most celebrated works, including Against the Current.

Our community continues to celebrate and preserve this artistic legacy through local arts and cultural activities that recognize the importance of Tom Thomson's contribution to Canadian art and the cultural identity of Northern Ontario.

Tom Thomson & the Night Sky

The night sky also played an important role in Thomson's artistic life. He created a series of nocturnal paintings exploring moonlight, stars, northern lights, forests, lakes, and the atmosphere of the northern landscape at night.

His night-themed works include:

  • Moonlight (1913–14)
  • Hot Summer Moonlight (1915)
  • Moonlight, Algonquin Park (1915)
  • Northern Lights (1916)
  • Nocturne: Forest Spires (1916)

These paintings demonstrate how the changing light of the Moon, the night sky, and the natural landscape shaped Thomson's artistic vision.

For generations, people in this region have looked to the night sky for inspiration, storytelling, artistic expression, and a deeper connection to nature. This tradition continues today through community stargazing.

About the Experience

This interactive community program invites participants to explore the relationship between art and astronomy through storytelling, live painting, community participation, and telescope observation.

A local artist will create a live painting inspired by Tom Thomson's artistic style and the surrounding landscape. Participants will be invited to contribute their own brushstrokes and become part of the artwork.

The evening will also explore the stories behind Thomson's nocturnal paintings and how his work continues to influence the artistic and cultural identity of our community.

As daylight fades, the program will transition from canvas to cosmos, connecting Thomson's fascination with the northern landscape to the night sky above Tom Thomson Park.

Participants will then be introduced to the night sky and telescope observation, with an opportunity to observe the Moon and other visible celestial objects, weather and viewing conditions permitting.

The community painting will remain on display throughout the evening so participants can continue contributing brushstrokes during the event.
